The Art of Living Meaningfully and Well

How would we redesign economies, markets, and organizations to help us live better? Umair Haque gives three lessons for turning the crumbling dream of prosperity into an opportunity.

What’s the Latest Development?

Ranked as one of the 50 most important management thinkers today, Umair Haque wants to redesign and reimagine prosperity. We can no longer take progress for granted, he says—that dream died in the financial crash of 2007. Only by changing the most micro level of the economy can we affect true global change. Haque believes you’ll have to get serious about your own human potential, and how deeply, authentically, and powerfully, over the course of your life, you’re going to fulfill it.”

What’s the Big Idea?

Haque offers three pieces of advice to help visionaries and leaders lead more meaningful lives. First, cultivate yourself better. The goal of education should not be simply to hold down a neo-Fordist job but to create individuals (that’s you) with “a moral compass, an ethical core, a cosmopolitan sensibility, and a long view born of historicism.” Second, create something dangerous. Third, forgive (and fail). “As the great poet Antonio Machado once wrote: ‘walker, there is no path; the path is made by walking.'”
