The Decline of Men, and the Need for “Male Studies”

Lionel Tiger, the Charles

Darwin Professor of Anthropology at Rutgers University, is no stranger

to controversy.  He has made a career out of “telling it like he sees

it” when he ventures to describe the biological roots of human social

behavior.  In his Big Think interview, Tiger suggests that the recent Great Recession was caused in part by

innate male aggression.  People get religion, he argues, because at a neurochemical level, believing in God makes them feel good.  He is suspicious of drugs like Ritalin because they essentially work to make male behavior more female-like.  He also calls for the establishment of “Male Studies” as an academic discipline.
