Willa Cather: Artistic Growth Means a Refinement of Truthfulness
“Artistic growth is, more than it is anything else, a refining of the sense of truthfulness. The stupid believe that to be truthful is easy; only the artist, the great artist, knows how difficult it is.”
Willa Cather (1873-1947) was an American author who achieved recognition for novels such as My Antonia and Oh Pioneers! Cather’s trademarks included Great Plains settings and thoughtful explorations of character actions and motives. She was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1922 and is considered one of the great American writers of her era.
