Audrey Hepburn’s Final Salute to the Movies
Audrey Hepburn (1929-1993) was a British actress, humanitarian, and cultural icon of Hollywood’s golden age. The star of such films as Sabrina, Roman Holiday and Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Hepburn is also notable for her work with UNICEF as a cultural ambassador who visited Ethiopia, Somalia, Vietnam, and Central America in the final years of her life. The following quote is from Hepburn’s statement accepting the Screen Actors Guild Achievement Award in 1993. It was read by actress Julia Roberts as Hepburn’s failing health made it impossible for her to attend. She died later that month of appendiceal cancer. She was 63.
“I am proud to have been in a business that gives pleasure, creates beauty, and awakens our conscience, arouses compassion, and perhaps most importantly, gives millions a respite from our so violent world.”
