Social Locator App Puts Self-Photos On Screens In Bars

What’s the Latest Development?

MeetMe, a social locator app available for iOS and Android, is taking the concept of meeting local people a couple of steps further by adding a new feature, Photoboard, that will allow users to take and upload photos of themselves. Those photos are then tagged with the user’s location and added to a viewable stream of photos of other local users. As if that weren’t enough, the company has teamed with Zoom Media to get that stream displayed on digital screens at 500 bars across the US.

What’s the Big Idea?

MeetMe is much more popular outside of the US, and has only existed in its current form for four months, so this new addition is an attempt to gain more “local” (as in American) followers. It also “gives users another point of entry…to start connecting with each other, complementing existing features such as an ‘Ask Me’ section that lets you jump into conversations with others.” COO Geoff Cook believes Photoboard has great potential to improve on MeetMe’s existing success: “[N]early 60% of MeetMe users have met someone else on the app in real life.”
