We can start changing attitudes to pay inequality by looking each other in the eye and asking each other what we earn – without pride, without bitterness.
Changing attitudes to inequality should be a central task of the left…(but) begins with you and me. …Start next time you’re in the pub by mentioning your pay as if it was the most natural thing in the world, and drawing out your colleagues’ pay. If you have a union at your workplace, ask them to encourage members to share salaries — and put pressure on management to do the same (after all, your boss knows exactly what you’re earning). …(If) we can look each other in the eye and ask what we earn – without pride, without bitterness…we can make a start.
