“Anti-Rape” Undergarment To Hit Shelves In India

A team of three engineering students — two of them female — at the SRM Institute in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu have designed a camisole with a couple of extra features: sensors and an electric circuit board. When worn, the Society Harnessing Equipment (SHE) can sense when its wearer is being physically attacked and in response it delivers up to 82 electric shocks to the attacker while also sending a text message alert to family or police. The camisole also contains GPS to help authorities find the wearer.
What’s the Big Idea?
SHE represents one more response to the problem of women’s safety in India, which was starkly illustrated by the gang rape and subsequent death of a young student in December. The female members of the team, who note the difference between their secure upbringing and the realities of adult life, say that self-defense is necessary “[because] current laws are not enough to keep women safe.” The garment recently won the Gandhian Young Technology Innovation Award and should reach stores in less than a month.
