Finding Real Happiness at Work: Organizational Vision, with Sharon Salzberg, Buddhist Meditation Teacher and Author, Real Happiness at Work: Meditations for Accomplishment, Achievement, and Peace
We live in a world genuinely speaking of interdependence, interrelationship. And that’s not a romantic notion, it’s not a sentimental notion, it’s not even always very nice. It’s just true. And I think economic shows us this and certainly environmental consciousness shows us this that what happens over there doesn’t nicely stay over there. It ripples out over here. Even epidemiology shows us this, that we all matter, that we all count. And so I think that’s a tremendous vision for an organization to have, for a company to have.
Revolutionizing Success
I think that same reflection on interconnection goes outside the confines of just a particular workplace. We can realize that our actions are consequential and what we do matters and what we devote our energy to matters, and it ripples out throughout the world. And we can have that larger sense of being able to dissolve the construct of self and other and us and them. And to realize that we can, in some ways, revolutionize our sense of what success looks like and what impact we have on the world. And I think one could do that without sacrificing that sense of being on the forefront of thinking and really wanting to do the best that one can.
Guided Reflection
Just as one way of doing a reflection on the vast interconnected web of life, as you sit just see who comes to mind as having played any role at all in your watching this right now. Somebody told you about this network or somebody told you about a book or somebody said, “Here, take a look at this.” Or whatever. This moment in time is actually a confluence of conversations, interactions, relationships – maybe somebody challenged you and said, “think a little differently.” Or somebody encouraged you. Just see who comes to mind. And it gives you something of a sense of how every moment in time is this coming together of causes and conditions and connections of interactions. That’s actually the nature of every moment in life.
