The New York Philharmonic’s Alan Gilbert on Conducting
Alan Gilbert, the music director of the New York Philharmonic, stopped
by Big Think’s offices Friday afternoon to talk about his work as a
conductor, about what he hears when he is conducting, and about the job
of bringing disparate musical talents together toward a common goal.
Gilbert, who debuted as musical director in 2009, also spoke about what
it’s like to conduct his mother, longtime Philharmonic violinist Yoko
Takebe. He said that it’s good to have someone he trusts as a sounding
board, but that while he is in the midst of a performance he rarely
thinks about their relationship.
