A “TED Talk” From The Future?
What’s the Big Idea?
Officially released for the TED2012 conference, this clip (above) is the latest trailer for the upcoming summer blockbuster Prometheus. Director Ridley Scott has said the movie is set in the universe he first created in Alien, and in our sneak peak we are thrown into the heat of a TED Talk in the year 2023 – and from there epicness ensues…
What’s the Significance?
The orator of this poignant talk (played by Guy Pearce) goes by the name Peter Weyland. The character is oddly reminiscent of a futurist John Galt (from Ayn Rand’s Atlas Shrugged),as he seems to be at the frontier of innovation, pressing full speed ahead despite some resistance. The description (below) released alongside the video suggests Weyland is up to some extraordinary things:
Peter Weyland has been a magnet for controversy since he announced his intent to build the first convincingly humanoid robotic system by the end of the decade. Whether challenging the ethical boundaries of medicine with nanotechnology or going toe to toe with the Vatican itself on the issue of gene-therapy sterilization, Sir Peter prides himself on his motto, “If we can, we must.” After a three year media blackout, Weyland has finally emerged to reveal where he’s heading next. Wherever that may be, we will most certainly want to follow.
